When typing a message you can add all kinds of thinks like colored text, smilies, images, and quote text. To do the majority of this stuff you should use the standard Reply link vs using the Quick Reply box. You can easily use all the smilies by clicking the "ALL" button on the quick reply OR if using the standard reply screen you can get them by clicking on the "view more emoticons".

To add color to your text you should use the standard reply. Highlight the text and then click on the color you want in the color bar.
