Java chatroom is killing my computer

Whenever I try to open the chatroom (default or floating), my screen starts flashing, everything goes dead, I hear the chatroom say welcome, but my graphical memory is all shot (kind of like a failing NES game). I had to log out and back in again to my computer to reset the graphics. My specs are

Firefox 3.5.6
Gentoo linux
Java plugin version 1.6.0_17-b04

Can't think of anything else to say, it's been happening for a couple months now. Any chance you guys would switch to an irc server? I'll administrate it! ha ha

I'm sorry to hear that. I can't get in either and I use Gentoo Linux most of the time also and I reported it to the tech admin. When I try to enter the chatroom it just sits and spins and nothing happens. I tried to reload Java with no luck.
