What do thanks do?

If I "thank" someone what does that do? I often forget to but I was wondering what it did. Hope I posted this in the right spot.

I've never done it but I've gotten two PMs recently saying that someone thanked me for a certain comment. So I guess it just sends them a message.

Yep, you get sent a message letting you know that you have been thanked, and your reputation points increase with the amount of thanks you get (I think).
