what is the difference between outbox and sentbox when PMing

I sent 2 PMs and thet are in my outbox. Some of my old PMs sent are in my sentbox. What is the difference. Are the ones in the outbox sent or do I have to do something (like "send and Receive" in Outlook) to send these PMs ?

Been posted before but

Sent box are PMs that have been read.
Outbox are PMs that have NOT been read yet, and can still be deleted or edited before being read.

PM's go to your outbox as soon as you hit 'submit', and like ferret said, you can still edit or delete them if you want. When the person reads the pm, it gets transferred to your sentbox.
