If you are using the regular old hood lamp that comes with most aquariums I would stick to plants like Anarachis, Anubius, Mosses, Java Ferns, and Crypts. With plants like that you would need little more than a few hours of light per day and even fertilizers as low quality as API's Leaf Zone.

Don't fear the plants. Plants can actually help provide the natural setting for the fish. I suggest your read about the fish and what type of habitat they need. Plants also remove Nitrates in your tank.

Click on this, this is a list of plants and mosses that can be placed inside your aquarium, at the same site you'll find information about fishes as well and their preferred habitat.

Aquarium Plants

Enjoy!
