jobe root sticks

I know someone was talking about using these in a tank. Cutting them down and using them by the roots in the sand/gravel.

Today Joe is on the hunt for plants, and since there are several garden shops and wal-marts he can choose from he will stop by for some.

I know a little about plants (landscaping, but mostly cutting lawns). I know that if you put some fert too close to a plant it will burn it. How small would I cut the root sticks, how close would I place them as well?

I got some stuff from seachem when I was out... I now have to return the fern and grass I got.... says for aquariums, but get home and find out they are not.
