I didn't do anything special at all with my sand bed. I used play sand but have been told that pool filter sand could work better. I did do a LOT of rinsing before putting the sand into the tank. I think I put around 50 lbs or so in and just put it right into the tank.

For filtration I have a Fluval 405 canister filter. I did also have a power head but that was only to help with putting the CO2 into the water, not for filtration or anything.

I felt it made a huge impact on the look of the tank. I really enjoyed having the sand bottom because it made everything stand out more and looked more natural.

Just would like to know how you setup your tank with sand? Do you use an under gravel filter with powerheads? Do you seperate with something between under gravel filter and sand like maybe a fine mesh fabric? VERY interested in any advice on this subject. Thanx
