White cacoon looking pods

I don't know what these things are but I don't like it for two reasons.

1. It makes my tank look ugly.
2. I have a feeling they are no good.

I have removed my pumps, and disassembled my HOB...

It appeared to be fuzzy.

It is gone now, and I don't know if anything came from it. During a water change they came off very easily when I was cleaning the rocks.

Yup, all the white stuff...with the picture it is really hard to tell that looks web-like but it does, web-like is about the best description I can give it. So...encrusting sponge...cool!

Recommend a protein skimmer

Can anybody recommend a protein skimmer for a 55 gallon SW tank? Right now using 1 inch live sand, live rock, no fishes in the tank. I have to Marineland 330 power filters on the back and 1 powerhead...
