The only corals we had that would require the lighting we were using were the sps corals (the birdsnest and montipora). Basically, you can get away with less lighting, but be sure to research corals you like and their lighting requirements so you are prepared to meet their needs.

However, we don't have this tank running anymore. Everything got upgraded to the 50 gallon. We now run 6x 39W HO T5 over the 50 gallon and we have a lot more options for what we can keep, plus the light itself really makes everything look nicer.
