If the canister is in your budget, I'd say go for it. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, I'd suggest an Aquaclear 70. It comes with 2 intake tubes; you can either just use one, or add both (they fit together) for a deep tank.
*edit* Rather than toss the Eclipse hood, I think you should list it on Craigslist. Someone that doesn't have a planted tank would probably be willing to pay for it.
