It is just play sand. I got a 50 pound bag at Home depot for $2.98. You have to wash it really good before adding to a tank. I then sprinkled some small rock substrate on top that was left over from when I changed it over. I don't use any special plant substrate or root tabs. Just sand, liquid fertilizer and a small CO2 system.
