I've had it with my BBA (black beard algae/ brush algae) :rocket:

SO I googled some stuff how to get rid of it. Some say lower the Kh and PH, add more CO2 and so on. But these things require chemicals (mostly) and I don't want to spend money on that.

So I found out that TEA can get rid of the algae. Normal tea has caffeeine and so on, and will change your water parameters. But Rooibos tea will not, luckely I have rooibos tea.

The guy explained that 1 teaspoon / 13gal is enough. (he didn't try it himself yet, but some other people have and it works for them). It's been used as a secret remedy.

Well, I don't have any stuff to test my water, so I'll cross my fingers and hope.

for those who want to test it.

Get cheap rooibos tea, boil it over night in a cup. The next day it will be black. Add that liquid (1teaspoon) every day. That's it.

Any tips are welcome.
;-)

Here's a pic

,as you can see, the driftwood at the center is all covered with BBA, and my anubis is also covered, same goes for my amazon sword. It's getting worse and the BBA is not dissapearing, I cannot take the algae from my anubis, it's like growing on the inside. Very bad.

I have just started the threatment, the tea was like dark brown, that should do.
And I added 1+1/4 teaspoon.

Cool idea. I'm wondering what inside the tea is supposed to kill the algae? I'm not sure what is inside tea, but the two things that pop up in my head are caffeine (usually) and acidic.

Don't overdose. I had a friend that did a study on the effects of caffeine on small animals (invertabrates), she chose glass shrimp because you could see into their abdomen and count their heartbeat. At a certain dosage of caffeine (don't remember) heart rate becomes drastically irregular and deaths start to happen.

Yeah, It's the second day of dosing, and I don't put on the lights. Not that I see any changes at the moment.

Rooibos tea isnt actually TEA per-say... its actually from a different plant, the legume family of plants. it actually contains very little if ANY caffeine at all

all real TEA is actually from the same plant (Camellia sinensis)... just depends on the processing and oxydizing after it is picked...

Yes that's true, I forgot to mention that in detail. :p Thanks for telling!
________

But I'm still wondering how tea can kill algae?? What chemical or physical process does it make in water?

Well, third day dosing, still nothing changed, I'll put a picture on the 7th day.

If nothing happens good 'ol 3% hydrogen peroxide wipes everything algae-esque out with 0 detriment to fish and plants.
