Thanks! I always thought it had more of a rustic bayou design, but that works too. ;) lol

That Betta looks darn healthy! Rich color, nice finnage

Thanks! Well, that pic was taken yesterday right after I introduced him to the tank. Today, however, he looks a little limp. I'm sure he'll bounce back.

Update: ADF MIA

Now for some bad news... I got home today and was looking frantically for one of my ADF's. The other one, (the active one), was ok, but my 'lazy' one went MIA. After looking through the plants and skimming the gravel base, I decided to start carefully lifting the decor.

Low and behold, I found him... deceased. :( Apparently, my gravel level wasn't deep enough to cover a small slit at the base of the faux wood decor piece and he somehow managed to wiggle in there and couldn't get out.

I was so upset, I pulled that piece out, and replaced it w/ the "stump" decor out of my 55g. I then put the, (what I now refer to it as), the "deadly decor" in my 55g. I'm not worried about my fish in that tank getting trapped because I have a deep gravel base. Plus I made sure it was pushed down as far as it could go, so all of the slits were covered. I made absolutely certain of that!!

This just annoys me! The main reason why I bought that piece was so that the frogs could lounge on the "branches". However, they designed that decor where the base was jagged which created little slits. Why don't they just use a mold that makes a level base? You don't see it under the gravel anyway! GAH!!!

Ok, sorry, I had to vent. I already miss seeing the little guy in the tank, (even though he didn't move around that much). Oh and to make me feel 'even better' my husband was teasing me and calling me a frog killer.

:bawl: RIP Froggy

Awww...poor froggy! I hope your Betta and other froggy aren't to depressed...sorry for your loss :(

Thanks! Actually they're doing quite well despite the untimely death of their tank buddy. In fact, (after I was done switching out decor), I decided to add an airstone in the back corner of the tank and my froggy loves it! He kept crawling over to it, so he could be carried up the current. It was hilarious watching him do that! So, I guess he did cheer me up a little w/ his antics. I will eventually get him a new frog buddy, but for now he has his Betta buddy.

I'm sorry about the frog.

Accidents happened sometimes, also this incidents teach us how the animals never stop to explore every niche of the tank!

Wish you the best, you are not a frog killer but an animal lover! Lol
;)

Nice, I recently went out and got a 15 gallon starter so here eventually im gonna have to move up to a 29 gallon :D

Thank you for the kind words! :D I told my boss about my froggy and he seems to think that the other froggy pushed him in there to make it look like an accident. I couldn't help but  at his 'theory'.

This is how it begins... just so you know. ;) I started out 16 years ago w/ a 20 gallon, took 16 years off from fish-keeping, and jumped right into the 55 gallon. Now I'm wanting to buy an even larger tank for our basement... but that won't happen. I'm driving my husband :eyes: with the tanks that I have as it is. lol

Revised Layout: 10 Gallon Betta Tank

Here are some pics of my 10 gallon after I revised the decor layout. I also came up w/ a way to illuminate the background after 'lights-out'. It not only gives the Betta and ADF enough light to get around the tank, but it also looks incredible! The pic isn't the best, but you can see how the background "glows".

Believe it or not, it's a light that came out of my Christmas Village house. lol All I did was place the clip that surrounds the bulb in between the stand and the wall so it would be stationary. Now if I can do the same thing to my 55 gal. I'm thinking that a can light may be needed for that one though. ;-)

Don't feel too bad:(. I just vacuumed one of my cory cats while doing my weekly pwc. I frantically tried to get him out of the vac and disassembled the vac with pressure still in the hose. The cory was shot out of the end and I haven't found him yet. I thought he might have made it into the tank but I can't find him. My wife is no help. She just keeps saying "Oh yeah, he's dead".

:( That is so sad. I'm sure that was a pretty scary ordeal for him. If you're positive that he shot back into the tank... he must still be in there! I certainly hope your wife is wrong and you find him, alive and well!

Plants and ADF

Thanks, guys! :D

I found myself at Petco this morning and I got another African Dwarf Frog, along w/ a bunch of really nice live plants. I told myself that I was never going to buy another living thing from there, (due to all the dead fish that I saw in their tanks lately), but I couldn't believe how healthy the fish and plants looked! I'm guessing that there was a change in personnel or something. The guy that helped me actually asked if my tank was properly cycled before he bagged up anything. I appreciated him asking me that as most don't and just sell the items to unprepared fishkeepers.

I placed the plants in my 55 gallon as soon as I got home. I will try to upload pics in the next few days or so of that, (along w/ my new ADF). I decided to keep a few of my nice artificial plants in there for a little color... but the real plants certainly adds more beauty to the layout.

Oh and, as I had hoped, my effort to breed my male Dalmatian Molly w/ my Gold Dust Mollies is paying off. It appears as though all of my GD Mollies are pregnant! :D He is such a mack daddy! lol After seeing the little baby bumps the other day, I set-up a safe haven area for the fry on the right side of the tank near the heater. They have many hiding places which should help save a few of them if I'm not there to net them and place them in my breeder tank. I also purchased a tank divider to use once I start seeing a lot of fry, (afterall, my breeder tank can only hold so many). So, yes, it looks like I will be updating this thread quite a bit over the course of the next month. lol

Edit: Forgot to mention... the new ADF made himself right at home and is "playing" w/ my other ADF! (y)

Nice! You are giving me great ideas! I enjoy reading your dissertations. Thanks

Nice! You are giving me great ideas! I enjoy reading your dissertations. Thanks

Thanks! :D I hope I can also help others w/ n00b mistakes. For instance, buying plants before researching them... only to find out that they're NOT fully aquatic. Eh, yep, I did a boo-boo! lol

My ignorance is illustrated in more detail in my next post...

My Non-Aquatic Plant Purchase Fail

While most people would be irritated that their LFS, (in my case, Petco), sold them non-aquatic plants, I can't help but laugh.

Yep, I did it, the ultimate plant n00b fail!

FAIL #1: "Aquatic Combo"
"Aquatic"? Really? Nope. Not after researching the plants that were listed on the plant tag. The following were the plants in the combo...

Dracaena, Spathiphyllum, Ophiopogon, Trichomanes, and Syngonium

Just researched them, only to find out that there is Lucky Bamboo, Peace Lily, etc. in this combo and they are NOT aquatic at all! What's really sad is I knew this! But w/ the scientific names listed, instead of the common names, I overlooked it. Although, I did read that these plants can stay in a tank for a couple of months, uh, if you want them to rot and pollute your water.

I'm not too terribly upset about it though... I was needing a nice plant for my office. :D

FAIL #2: Mondo Grass
Eh, yep, what I thought would make a great hiding place for my soon-to-be fry, this little guy w/ his beautiful gerth belongs in soil too.

Why exactly were these plants in the tank at the LFS and being sold as an aquatic plants? IMO, I think the LFS's are trying to pull a fast one on their consumers. *cough* Jerk-offs. *cough*

WINS:
Anubias, Amazon Sword, (Echinodorus bleheri), and Waterweed, (Egeria densa)

The Anubias is currently placed in the substrate because I didn't have time to attach it to my driftwood. The Amazon Sword it placed in the substrate as well, but its location is perfect. I just have the Waterweed floating and plan on keeping it that way, (at least for now). From what I hear, those grow like weeds... who knew?! lol

So yes, I goofed, but it taught me a few valuable lessons...

1) NEVER impulse-buy when it comes to live plants!
2) ALWAYS research plants, (like fish), BEFORE purchasing!

Ok, so there you go. Fire away! lol :splat:

Don't feel so bad. I did the same exact thing. I bought an "aqua fern" that was listed as aquatic from my local Petsmart. The funny thing is that it came in 2 different sizes, 3" and 6". The 3" variety was listed as aquatic whereas the 6" was labeled "semi-aquatic." Go figure;). Well I bought it anyway. Originally, I wasn't too interested on keeping them. I had bought them with the intention of them being a food source for my snails. Ironically though it's still here and that's been about 3 or 4 months. I still keep my eye on it to make sure it just doesn't die off and pollute my water.
