Have a 10 gal with a java fern, amazon sword and a small moss ball, would it be possible to add another small sword w out running co2? I use root balls and seachem comp.

I am totally addicted so I don't think you can have to many plants! Definitely you can add more. Low tech doesn't ever mean you can't have a beautiful lush green tank!

Me to! Plants have become as much fun as the fish for me, I'd like tons but I just can't run co2 in my apt

Well this may sound crazy but I share a not so huge apt with my gf, if I bring anymore equipment in she might leave and never comeback. Than the whole trying to explain why there is a scuba tank sitting under the dining room table thing:/

My DIY set up is a couple of 2 liter diet coke bottles a mason jar for a bubble counter,
a cheap fluval drop checker, and a small powerhead to diffuse. With a 10 gallon you could get a way with a 20oz or a 1liter bottle. It's a yeast, water, sugar and baking soda mixture. Super easy to hide I just don't hide mine. I also dose glut. Here is mine it is on a 37g tall. Forgive the crayon on the wall I have an artistic 3 and 6year!

Wow! Impressive, so how long will that setup run before you have to refill?

Depends on the amount of yeast I use. I could get it to last about a month but I add a bunch more than most people so around 2 weeks. I like using 2 bottles and then I just change out 1 bottle a week. I bake a lot of bread so I just go to either Costco or Sam's Club to get huge bags of sugar and yeast. I can get a years worth of yeast for my bread and my tank for around 8 dollars.

Not bad.. I could just disguise it as a recycling bin and no one would be the wiser:) what are the pros and cons of running this setup?

Pros: are it's cheap really cheap. All you need is an empty bottle or 2 airline, yeast, sugar, a check valve and something to use as a diffuser.
You don't have to turn it off at night if you don't want to because it is usually less co2 saturation in the water

Cons: Consistency. It's hard to control the amount of co2. That's why the bubble counter and drop checker really helps. It can be messy if you aren't careful.

I hide my DIY CO2 in the tank cabinet. It made a big difference in plant growth.

Regarding the topic of too many plants, last night I pulled a ton of plants out of my tank:

When plants get too crowded they start to grow upward as they compete for available light. In a shallow tank that is not always desirable:

Anyhow, I threw the extra plants in a holding tank:

Tank is much less crowded and visually more appealing IMO. I am expecting a shipment of some low growing plants in the open area in the center:

So if I do run co2 will my plants basically grow twice as fast, my sword has grown beautifully since I got it, also just picked up two rotala indica, which the guy told me grow pretty well w/out co2

Fresh2o tank looks amazing! That's some high def aqua scaping right there!

Plant name confusion.

I have a little tree shaped plant that I really like. They used to be called Ammania Bonsai but internet info says it was renamed Rotala Indica. I looked it up under this new name and what they show is NOT this plant. Jetta, Rivercats, Aqua-chem or any other plant gurus can you help me out here. I hate telling people about this plant and be using the wrong name.
Thanks, OIS.
