While my tank is cycling I've been researching aquascaping and ways to make my setup look nicer and more natural. I've tried to search for tank backgrounds and it seems like it's cheesy pictures or shiny colors. Where can I get a basic flat-black background that I can stick on the back outside of my 10 gallon tank? Or should I just make one myself and use some kind of glue to stick it on?

Try the superfish deco posters - bottom of the page. They are reversable and a couple have plain blue or plain black.

I got this one:

In one tank I used black poster board. In the other, a black plastic garage bag. I prefer the less shiny materials, especially if you take pictures using flash (bad reflection).

I've tried the poster board I find it got wrecked easy due.to splashing

There is this really cool spray-on black rubber in a can. It takes a few coats, but once on, it should peel off any time you want to.

Some of mine I painted black and some I used burlap cloth. Just sewed velcro to the burlap, put the other side of the velcro on the tank and stuck the burlap on. It gives a nice textured look behind plants, wood and rockwork. It's also very cheap and you can remove it if you need to.

I use 3d structured backgrounds they cost more but I wouldn't set up a tank without one anymore.

I've thought about using one of these, but was worried about water flow. Do you ever have an issue with water stuck behind a 3D and getting nasty? What about fish?

I've never had any issues I stick in to the back of the tank with aquarium grade sealant so no water gets behind it. The fish love it they feel safer with a nice background they sent me a tweet stating such.
