As I understand it, glut is pretty nasty stuff and should be handled carefully. So if it's so toxic why doesn't it harm fish? I get it that it's massively diluted in the tank as you only use a little, but of course the fish all swim to the top when I am nearby hoping they will get fed. I try not to squirt it directly on them but sometimes they will swim right into it so they are pretty much going through it neat.

Is anyone able to explain why it doesn't hurt them?

Thanks!

My apisto takes 25ml straight to the dome and does a little dance, i actually think he likes it.. I'm not positive but I think it's the activator that's the serious business.. i have a towel I pour over and it has yellow stains from where I've spilled?? I'm following here..

Ha! Masochistic tendencies perhaps?

Yikes. Glut/metricide is a chemical and should be treated as hazardous when handling it. As an example I once spilled a large quantity of metricide on my entire hand and the hand went numb for a few hours -- can't be a good sign. Anyway I try my best to keep it away from my eyes and face and always wash my hands after using it.

Here's some useful info dug up by TPT's sewingalot:

I actually wrote Seachem about the topic. Yes, they have a vested interest, but I think they have valid points:

We consulted with our chemist in regard to your email and
this was his response:

"First, I should tell you that Flourish Excel is not a 1.7
per cent glutaraldehyde solution.

Second, the "-cide" portion of the name "Metracide"
indicates it kills living organisms. That is why Metracide
is sold in the first place. If it were sold as an additive
for aquariums, I'm sure that the strength would be
adjusted to achieve the desired goal of enhancing plant
growth. As it is, it has the strength to kill microbes.
This means that it should be diluted, and carefully.
(Glutaraldehyde does real damage to the eyes, so I would
wear safety goggles.)

Remember that glutaraldehyde is a reducing agent. The
activator that comes with Metracide sounds like an agent
to increase the reducing ability of the glutaraldehyde. I
would most certainly avoid that. But it makes me wonder if
there is something other than water in the inactive
ingredients list, perhaps a buffer to help the activator
work better.

As a general rule, it is a good idea to wear gloves, and
to make sure that glutaraldehyde doesn't come in contact
with skin. Some chemicals are sensitizers, meaning that
repeated exposure to the chemical can cause a person to
break out in a rash, or worse. Glutaraldehyde is such a
chemical. I copied this from the OSHA (Department of
Labor) website:

"Long-term (chronic) effects: Glutaraldehyde is a
sensitizer. This means some workers will become very
sensitive to glutaraldehyde and have strong reactions if
they are exposed to even small amounts. Workers may get
sudden asthma attacks with difficult breathing, wheezing,
coughing, and tightness in the chest. Prolonged exposure
can cause a skin allergy and chronic eczema, and
afterwards, exposure to small amounts produces severe
itching and skin rashes. It has been implicated as a
possible cause of occupational asthma."

The stronger the solution of glutaraldehyde, the greater
the chance of acquiring a chemical sensitivity. For the
record, somewhere in my 35 years of working in the
chemical industry I picked up a sensitivity to
glutaraldehyde. I also use Flourish Excel in both my
planted tanks, with no adverse reaction.

To play it safe, I would recommend continuing to use
Flourish Excel, and not substituting something that was
designed to do something other than deliver organic carbon
to plants. Of course, I work for Seachem, so you would
expect me to say that. But we develop our products with
the hobbyist, and not the hospital, in mind. Flourish
Excel is safe when used according to directions. It does
not have to be diluted. You don't have to worry about
developing chemical sensitivities. We do recommend that
you keep it out of your eyes, a good recommendation for
all our products."

I hope this information was helpful and please let us know
if you have any additional questions. Have a wonderful
day!

Thanks, yes I'd seen that before as I've done quite a bit of research on this stuff. I still don't understand how it doesn't hurt the fish but I've given up trying to get to the bottom of it!! Everyone here uses it.....everyone says the fish don't get hurt and don't react to it in any way so hey, I guess I'll just accept it!

Yikes re your hand. I will be sure to handle it carefully and keep it away from the kidlets.

CO2 hurts fish too but not if in appropriate doses...

This Is rather concerning info.. I've recently developed a wheeze with a tightness in my chest, accompanied by lung gum..

Google the MSDS sheet for the most benign household chemicals and it will be disturbing.

So are home inspection reports.

I've never noticed any issues and the fish swim right through the chemical cloud despite my best efforts sometimes (try doing that with pimafix). I'm a bit worried though that I'm dosing at 1.6% strength but have picked up a bottle at 10% strength from a lfs. Thinking of diluting this down (distilled water maybe?) just in case. Following as well.

10% ? What is it ? That's really strong glut.

Really? Don't know what that is but doesn't sound good....

I hope it's just a coincidence, i was at a bonfire last sat and started coughing sun morning.. i really hope it's not from my precious metricide..the algae would like that..

Yikes don't get sick Brookster - who will help me sort out my fish tank??!!

Hopefully it's just a cold and nothing glut related.....

I'll survive, takes a lot more than a cough and wheeze to keep me down;) feeling better already, i borrowed my gf ' s inhaler!

Ah probably the bonfire. Could be part psychological as well. I'm sure the inhaler will help a lot.

I use excel but will switch to metricide once the bottle runs dry. Good info! (y)

I can assure you its 100% physical;) probably nothing to do with the metricide though, just odd timing..

I didn't mean it to be offensive. Sorry about that. I just meant that maybe because you think about gluteraldahyde and its safety issues the cough would be brought to your attention more easily.
