He looks GREAT!(y)

Thx! I think next weekend I'm going to remove these remaining rams to a 20 long. Looking like my female gbr is about to pop, might have a chance to collect hers before they eat them.

Hey Coralbandit; Do you know at what point I will start to see natural bonds forming? I am in the ~9th week of their age.

I have seen my GBR pair up as soon as 3 months lately.
They may start to bond earlier but hard to see.
I do believe the more fry there are in the tank, the more a pair may strengthen trying to distinguish themselves from the group.
Last time with my yellow guys when 1 pair formed and laid eggs, 4 other pairs were starting to bond and separate themselves also!.
I know everyone says keeping the Bolivians are easier then the GBR, which seems true ,but without any fact to cite,I believe breeding and raising the two would be equally difficult IMO.
You should confidently expect as good results with your GBR as you have had with the Bolivians!
Quickie sexing your Bolivians is biggest are males right now!
Don't discount the smaller, look for the difference from the largest if they are not bonding.
Try to note the difference in the bonding pair for future sexing reference.
Good luck and looking forward to pics of the GBR(y)!

Will Do! I don't have many fry do to my early learning mishaps with a gravel vac. But will take in this info for the next batch of fry (if the timing is right; limited space and tanks)

Update:

GBR's spawned about 2 1/2 days ago, and I think they finally figured out how to raise their eggs/fry. They have not eaten them yet! Yay! :D

Took 3-4 Spawns but seems they might have finally figured it out. If they can care for them "wigglers" *fingers crossed* til Sunday. Ill move them into the 10 gallon using 5 gallon of total water. Then move the Bolivians into the 20 long since "supposedly" dollar gallon days start this Sunday.

This could not have worked out any better, but I am not at the finish line yet, I still need to see wigglers!

Good luck!(y)
My golds just tricked me and moved eggs last week and I thought they ate them.
This AM I see the swarm free swimming with both parents!

Yeah same here, I thought they ate them last night. Nope they moved the few they had left and they're some wigglers now. This is the first time they got this far. I am hoping that now they see what actually happens with them (instead of food). Then maybe a higher rate on the next spawn.

:( I failed, I failed miserably hard yesterday. Ugh, I cannot believe what happened... I finally had wigglers, after the my lighting siesta yesterday, I noticed that they were getting lax on protecting their wigglers. So I made a judgement call, and moved the wigglers into a hatchery (the floating kind) and I was going to just run and buy the new tank while they were in there. So i used my small gravel vac, to pick the wigglers up and into the fry net. While doing that the female came over to defend her babies, and she shot straight into the gravel vac and became lodged into the hand pump!!!!!! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

So I had to cut the hand pump open and she was lodged in the out flange!!!! I had to use a Q-tip to lightly press her back into the pump and then into the fry net. :'( she is freaking tore up. Bloody side fin, nic's on her head and dorsal fins, and slightly ragged tail fin. SO I flew as fast as I could to the store to pick up the 20 Long, by the time I got back ~30mins. They Angle and Tetras were having their way with the babies in the fry net. I moved her into the 10G tank by herself, to try and get her healed up. I don't know the outcome but she did make it through the night.

TL;DR; I lost the GBR babies, and fearing I may have lost my only female GBR. Murphy's Law.... :(

^wow!^
These are the experiences we don't want!
Sorry to hear this but you are not alone.
My GBR go nuts when I vacuum even without fry!
If anything like a snail or whatever starts to move in the watercloumn in vacuum they are all trying to get in it.
I have lost more then one this way.

The breeding net never worked for me even in it's own tank.
My yellows ate a good amount of the free swimmers ,but I pulled the parents this am.
With fry they are so protective I got both parents out of my 29 with my hand!
They probably would have attacked a net the same but didn't want to accidently catch any of the remaining fry.
I hope she recovers for you.

The breeding net was a temp thing to just get by for about 60mins, till all hell broke loose :(

That is impressive to do with the hand, mine just dart all over the place :)

On the plus side, the baby Bolivians are now in the 20 Long, and are just finding out what "current" is :) lol

Hey Coral, female is looking a little better, she is eating live brine shrimp in the hospital tank. But they male looks lost, his colors are faded, and moping around the tank. With them being separated and if the female pulls through. Will the bond right up or good chance they wont?

IMO this will strengthen their bond, but you can never tell.
Glad to hear she is looking better!(y)

Well she is looking really good this morning, I think there is 90% chance she will make it now. The blood has left the right side fin, the nic's on her had are pretty much healed up, and her front rays are starting too look better. She is actively coming to eat the food when i shake the food container now.

I think I will be able to attempt babies with the GBR again!:dance:

I also don't think their bond is broken either, because the 10G hospital tank is about 8 inches away from the side of the 36G, and both the male and female see each other and are swimming up and down trying to find way to get to one another! What could have been a total disaster, turned into just having to start babies over again!

If she is this way later tonight, or tomorrow (depending on how i feel) I will move her back to the main tank.

Update:

Bolivans are getting big!! Maybe an inch now?!?

GBR has left me a present all week. She obviously fully recovered from getting hurt. Attempt number two to migrate them to a new grow out tank. Will probably use a turkey baster this time.

NICE!
Good luck with moving the fry.
It always hard times me.
I think I have done well and three days later....?

GBR:

The 72hr waiting game began late last night... I moved around I think 50+ GBR (to hard to tell) fry into the 10 gallon (~5 gallon of water), they're just learning to swim today. They can't stay up long, but they're trying!

Bolivian update:

Coloration and spots are really starting to shine. Almost 3 months
