What is the best place to get affordable guppies online? Live aquaria and aquarium fish.net seem to have good stock. Does anyone have experience with these? Thanks.

I am curious as well. My LFS mostly sell junk. True show quality about $50 a breeding trio. There must be a middle ground.

I would find a breeder and just buy before they are fully grown. Many get sold early. And cheap. There is almost always a local show breeder.

Aquabid is an option, local aquarium clubs. It's not always easy to find someone who has good fish.

Is there a reason you don't want to buy locally?

Hi!
A few reasons...
I am an owner of many species of rodents, reptiles etc, and pet stores treat them horribly. This is not as much the case with fish, but for the sake of all those poor animals I refuse to buy from petco, petsmart etc.

I would like lots of different strains, and many breeders only carry a few.

They are also usually very expensive.

The online stores I have been looking at have lots of different strains at 3-6 bucks a piece-exactly what I am looking for.

I am just wondering-what do you see as the advantage to buying locally?

I would probably look at some of the show breeders or specialists online if not buying from a local breeder.

The problem with that is that they are usually sooooo expensive. I need each fish to be under $10, if not $5.

I looked at aqua bid. The problem is that they are usually very good quality fish and so are (understandably) too expensive. I don't need the best quality guppies out there, I just want something pretty in my tank! Also, because they are all different sellers, I will be paying shipping costs on each purchase instead of one on 15-30 fish. I will look into local aquarium clubs. And I agree, it's proving to be very hard!

Id give you 15 gupps and 5 mollys for $25 shipped?

The issue is that I do not want 15 of the same strain. I am looking to get 1 or two of a bunch of different strains. This is usually not economical if I get them from an individual breeder like you. That is a great price though...I'll think about it. And be sure to let me know if you suddenly have other strains available! Thank you so much for the offer. Those are beautiful fish!
I'm not looking to get mollies.

$50 a trio is price for 3 month old fish from a truly top notch breeder. A price I would pay for something I really like, but I won't be buying anything I don't love at that price just to play around with breeding. Overnight shipping screws up the deal even worse.

It took some searching but I found some local deals to attempt to start a halfblack/blue strain.

Buying locally has a lot of benefits. Shipping cost is one of them.

It's less stressful for the fish. You get to see the fish before you buy them. You get to meet and interact with people who are devoted to what you are looking to get in to. It's better for the environment.

Just an option.

I agree that it would be great to get to see the fish and keepers first. However, how would it be less stressful for the fish? They have to be shipped to the store after all....I haven't thought of it being better for the environment. You're probably right. The other thing is...most of the places near me that sell fish have any idea what they're doing. Just today I saw a tank with golden white clouds and tropical fish. Honestly, I trust live aquaria.com far more than those pet stores.
