Sharks

Hi everyone,

I had a red tail shark that i just loved, he grew to about 2 inches long and looked great. I had him for about 3 years, i tried to have more but, not doing research on them, i didn't know you cant have 2 or 3 three of them without them getting into a fight with each other. At first i thought it might be a mating ritual or something until i found them dead. I read after that that i can have a school of them like 6 and they wont fight with each other.
Before i go and spend on 6 i would like some advise on this. Its not just the money, i get sad when they die, and angry at myself if its because of my lack of know-how. I would also like to know if i can have some bala-sharks along with them, silver sharks i believe there called, i have tried a few and lost them also, so i am playing it safe this time. :?

I had a red tail that was atleast 4" in lenght before it passed on.

I think the logic behind 6 of them getting along is that their agression is spreed out over all 6 vs being just focused on 1 or two individuals.

but please wait for a freshwater advisor to come along and give their info.

I was told by my local aquarium shop, that the best way to keep & appreciate these fish is by keeping them alone.
Mine is fantastic and seems to really enjoy being alone with all the other types of fish I have in my community tank, as well as complementing the aquarium really well.

I wouldn't have more than one even if I could, but it's personal choice.

I have 2 red fin sharks in my community tank and have never had a problem. They are in a 55 gallon tank. What size tank did you have yours in? I have heard that they will fight each other if there is not enough room for them to "get away" from each other. I guess they get sick of each others company from time to time (to completely personify the situation)

I'd agree with Jasonit, the bigger the tank, the better the chance you have of successfully keeping more than one.
My tank is 11.1 US Gallons, so one is perfect.

Sorry I don't know to much about the red tail shark, Other then they will jump from the tank. Try this site it is full of information and does go into keeping more then one.

My tank is 20 US gallon, i plan on getting a 29 Gallon for Xmas but i think that i can just only have on shark around in that size, either that or six.

I prefer 1.

Please disregard my previous message. I was thinking of the red fin or rainbow shark, not the red tail. Although I have heard that the rainbow shark can actually be a bit more feisty.

Sorry guys, the Shark i had was a Rainbow Shark, not a Redtail Shark, i always get them confused do to the translation down here in Mexico.

And yes they are more uptight je je je.
