l'm sure there are some who may think l'm crazy for going with a 10 instead of trying again with the 20. l don't mind going with the smaller tank. Water changes will be easier(I use 50% tap and 50% distilled water in 1 gallon jugs from Wal Mart. That's less jugs l gotta haul from Walmart to the...
Forgot to mention that the 10G that's been going almost a year is doing great. That tank always did well. The Glowlights and Corys are thriving. I had White Clouds in it. But I put them in the 20 since the 10 was overstocked. After 2 weeks in the 20 the White Clouds died.
Part 2 since the post was so long. l decided l didn't want a tank that big in the small apartment, and had an extra 10. So l had a heater and sand for it, and bought a glass versa top lid for it. The only things l'm using that were in the 20 are the thermometer, shipwreck ornament, and AC50. Set...
Hi guys. It's been a long time since I've posted, mainly because I've been frustrated with the 20 long. Never figured out what was wrong. First, I had a hard time getting the tank to fishless cycle. Put in 3 different brands of bacteria-Topfin, Dr Tim's, and Marineland. Then I tried filter media...
The LFS only had 3 Dwarf Neon Rainbows, 2 males and 1 female so I got them. He said they should get more in next week, so I'll get more. They're doing well. I check the ammonia and nitrite twice a day and it's good.
It's been a month since I started the fishless cycle. I started with some filter media from the 10 gallon. Didn't seem to jump start anything. I ended up buying 3 brands of bacteria in a bottle, including Dr Tim's directly from his site. Didn't speed things up. But last week while doing a WC on...
The 20 long during the fishless cycle. I put the LED light from the 10G for the pics. The last pic is the light in moonlight mode. Future plans include replacing the plastic plants with live plants.
I always felt that the hinge on the versa tops were in the way. It limited where I could place the light. And it blocked the light from the flash mounted above the tank when doing photography. The hinge was easier to remove than I thought it would be. I thought the hinge was glued to the glass...
I've been leaving the white LEDs on the 10 gallon on for about 12-14 hours a day. Recently I've been seeing brown algae spots on the glass. The nitrates are low and I do 35-50% WC's every week. I'm thinking about leaving the blue "moonlight" LEDs on when I'm at work so the fish have some kind of...
OK thanks for the advice. But I just thought of something else. Shouldn't you stir up your sand regularly anyway to avoid poisonous gas pockets from forming in the sand?
In the 20 long I plan on doing live plants, which is something new to me. But I like to rearrange the plants and decorations often. With Java Fern I understand it's good to attach the roots to a rock so this won't be a problem. But with the Jungle Val will I be able to uproot it from the sand...
Just put some Dr Tim's Aquatics ammonium Chloride and got the ammonia 1-2ppm. Then I put some bio media from the 10 gallon's filter in the Aquaclear 50. I'm hoping it won't take long to get it cycled.
