    Fishless Cycle One Month In

Almost two weeks since my last post. At that point, I was starting to see signs of nitrites and nitrates Yay!! then... then about three days ago the ammo stopped dropping. My nitrites dissapeared (went to 0) and nitrates peaked at 5-10 ppm. I have been checking PH daily and it has not dropped...

    Fishless Cycle One Month In

Well I finally am seeing Nitrites after five weeks! Last night I saw between 0-.25 and tonight I'm seeing .25. Looks like things are finally moving! Thank you to everyone who has chimed in with advice! Unless I'm missing something, it sounds as if I just need to keep the ammo at 4 ppm until...

    Fishless Cycle One Month In

That is sage advice, Ram. I will remove the carbon pad tonight and bump the temp up to the high 80s. I really wanted to stay away from any quick start chemicals so hopefully these steps will prove fruitful. I do not have an air pump but my spraybar and powerhead do create quite a bit of surface...

Thanks for the reply. I did mention my PH (steady 8 - 8.2). I used the same API test kit that I purchased new at the beginning of the year when I setup a 6g fluval edge in which nitrites and nitrates registered fine so I am fairly confident that the test kit is okay. I suppose I could always...

Thanks for the quick reply, George. I have no traces no nitrates either. It doesn't appear that I'm getting past the ammo>nitrites phase. I reseeded my canister filter last night with another filter sponge and turned my temp up to 85 degrees. Really hoping to see nitrites soon.

    Fishless Cycle One Month In

Hello everyone, I have been fishless cycling my 55 gallon for nearly a month now. below are my api test kit readings. I did seed the tank with a handfull of gravel in a nylon stocking, a couple pieces of malaysian driftwod and a filter sponge from an established tank. I'm confused as to my...

    Eheim green > black

I just ordered an eheim 2217 canister filter for my new 55gal. I am not a fan of the green plastic inlet and spraybar tubes. My thought was to boil the green pieces in black Rit dye to change the color from light green to super dark green/black. Rit is supposedly non-toxic and I have read other...

    Heater placement (under gravel)

@ RedFlame, yup just for asthetic reasons. Since it doesn't have a temp setting, adjustment is not a concern. hopefully it will be fine (functionally, longevity wise) under the gravel. thanks!

    Heater placement (under gravel)

Hello, This is my first post so hopefully I'm dropping this in the correct area. I have a newly setup Fluval Edge 6g. Being that this "all in one" kit did not include a heater, I purchased the 25w Fluval submersible polymer heater. My question: is it okay to pace the heater horizontally under...
