    Whacky thermometers

Just remember to stir the ice water while checking the temperature, so that there is no stratification of the temp's. Also, do it in a styrofoam cup so that it is somewhat insulated.

    RODI unit

I purchased the typhoon III which gives 150 gallons per day, from Air Water Ice. It cost about $275 or so. It comes with a TDS meter. I love it. Bruce

    LED lighting opinion

I have mostly a FOWLR but my fungia coral and my mushrooms do very well. At the LFS they have both SPS and LPS thriving under the lights. Bruce

    LED lighting opinion

I have them and love them! Not cheap, but the heat is minimal and the color is good! Bruce

A question about temperature and chillers

Hi. Well I had/have a similar problem, and it turned out to be the pumps producing heat! I had three pumps running (chiller, skimmer, main) and the chiller was constantly trying to keep the temp down, and was unable to keep the tank below 83°. This was with LED lighting which is virtually...

    Cleaner Shrimp

Hi, not a frequent poster, but I had to put my 2 cents in. My cleaner shrimp hid for a few days, but then found his spot, and he is always there. He cleans the lemon butterfly every so often. Each time a new fish is introduced into the tank, it goes up to the cleaner shrimp for a short time...

Narrowing down choices for fish for 125

Now that my tank is finally getting through its cycling, I am starting to decide which fish to add over the next few months. I will be going with a FOWLR. I figured that I should put at the top of the list, the bigger, must have fish first, and then add to the list the fish that can get along...

    Decreasing NitrAtes after ammonia spike

I thought I would start a new thread on this, because my ammonia problem seems to be solved. Originally I had added "cured" live rock, and my ammonia spiked and the fish got pretty lethargic. I got the fish out of the tank, and he is doing fine, now. I did a water test today, and my...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

I was previously doing a five gallon change every week, which amounted to 15% per month. I did not have much in there, remember. Anyway, the ammonia has now dropped to zero again, the nitrites are at either 1 or 5 (those two colors look so alike on the chart!) and the nitrates are back down to...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

I wanted to give an update on the tank. As of this morning January 5, six days after the incident, my ammonia has finally started to drop. I am 4.0 PPM on the ammonia, 1 on the nitrites, and 20 on the nitrates. I did a partial water change yesterday, but only 10 gallons, so I believe that I...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

I set up a quarantine tank last night, and the salt was not fully dissolved but when I looked at the fish, he was on his side, and appeared just about dead. Well anyway I put him into the tank, because I felt that was better than just letting it die. It broke my heart seeing the little guy...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

Why don't I just take out the rock, and re-cure it? Will that solve my problem? Then I can do another water change and the original live rock can start to process the ammonia, and I can finish making the vunuatu rock healthy. I can buy a 20 gallon tank today on the way home from work. Would...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

I will do another change when I get home tonight (my third). You know, this has been very frustrating because my tank was working perfectly, with excellent water chemistry, healthy fish, and no problems. I don't understand how the fish guy did not return my call. I would have expected him to...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

Well, I feel like I am getting conflicting responses from everyone I speak to. One response told me not to do a water change as that will delay the cycling, another said do a 30 to 50% change. The fish guy who sold me the "cured" rock didn't even call me back! So he's history, frankly. I think I...

Added live rock and ammonia shot up

Here is a follow up: I just tested the tank for ammonia and nitrites. The nitrite level is starting to climb, at .25 , but the ammonia level is still reading 8 ppm, which I assume means that it was even greater than 8 to begin with and may still be >8. At least the system is starting to...
