Yeah they'll eat off the ground unlike a lot of fish, if you want help with cleaning I'd recommend some Mystery Snails which you should find in most pet shops, and a few Malaysian Trumpet Snails which you can get off of eBay

eBay it lol. It's smooth with no sharp edges which is what you want. But I'm just saying you can do something along those lines, hell, buy clay and make a cave yourself then stick it in some rocks and gravel and there you'd have a custom build cave of your own making in your tank :)
I got one of those glow in the dark moon caves from wal marts pet supply for my little bro and propped it up in the middle of a pile of rocks, his cichlid loves it
Personally I think some pictus catfish are great starters, they stay small and when you get a school iv notices they'll usually just pick a side of the tank like a corner to hangout. I use to have pictus cats and a dragon fish, the dragon fish hung out in a log all day then came out at night...

Lol btw if he ends up being aggressive and you want to add something else what iv started to do with my betta's is add a young male minnow in their home, too quick for them to catch and eventually they learn to co-exist and iv been able to add them to tanks with several other fish after...
I just got ghost shrimp cause they're cheap and the pet store didn't have any others. I still like them and find them mostly on the back of the whisper filter I have
