    Ok. Good to know. Thanks.

    Re-Cycle advice

We are finally down to .25ppm nitrates and .5(ish) ppm amonia. :) I'll keep testing, and changing as needed - but thanks for the advice so I know we're on the right track. :) Would leaving the lights on overnight help keep the levels from spiking as high? (We have live plants.)

Yup, the nitrites were around 1.0ppm when I sent that and they were around 5.0ppm before the first bigger change - so that is better ;) Nitrates are holding around 5.0ppm. I just did a liquid ammonia test and it is down around 1ppm. That is a huge improvement (sad I know).

Thanks for the advice. :) I've done three 25 to 50% pwc today, the NO2 is still at .5, the ammonia seems to be dropping steadily though. So, some progress. We are now out of the de-chlorinator, so I didn't want to do another change until I can get to the store this evening. I presume that...

Cons of a Pleco? (help save an innocent pleco!)

If you do want something to consume algae - there are other fish and creatures that do eat it. However, as the others said - you don't have to have one and it is better to have to deal with algae yourself than to have too many fish ;) Good luck!

    Re-Cycle advice

Ok - had to do parasite and fungus treatments on tank after adding fish initially (new tank, so we put them all in straight from the pet store, mistake) -- we've been fighting to get things cycled since (we'd never had to treat for any illness before in our large tank - we chose poorly I guess -...

    Baby platy

Thanks! They seem to be doing fine - they've been eating the flakes and the yolks. :) Momma didn't have more fry - she looked so skinny last night! I'm a bit concerned because she no longer looks as skinny, I guess I'll just have to watch and see. I've been reading that they can switch sex...

    Baby platy

Thanks! I am amazed at how tiny the fry really are! We have 10 in the hospital so far. I have now moved the momma to a little homemade breeder tank in the big tank - I think they were all pretty stressed when I moved the plants out for a bit so I could net the fry... I think I'm going to...

I meant to attach this pic of the babies.

    Baby platy

So, our Mickey platy (named Minnie by my 5 year old) had her fry sometime overnight. I have found 9 fry and am moving them to the little hospital tank. I'm guessing momma is done having fry, but I don't really know how long that part actually takes. Can someone let me know? Also, although we...

    Platy and Loach together

We recently set up a tank and we decided to get 5 assorted Platy and a couple of bottom dwelling loaches (1 chain and 1 'algae eater'). Are these truly ok to keep together? I have discovered it is recommended that Platy have salt and we've always understood that loaches should not. The Platy...
