I don't use any special gravel I just choose the one that has smaller rocks and they have more of a polished look to so it won't harm them also I have a piece of driftwood with alot of plants so that should help them I don't use sand because it can be a hassle to clean
The only fish you can't keep are aggresive fish such as cichlids because they will try to eat the kuhlis I have two kuhli loaches its best to at least get them in a pair they enjoy the company of their species and as for substrate I have gravel and they do fine in it. there strong so they can go...
I mean they have alot of fish but I rescue the ones that they don't give chances to the rejects essentially even if it comes off as if im supporting them im not im supporting the animal

Yeah I see what your saying its always different for consumer and seller I wasn't referring to anyone in particular nor you because you have way good prices!! but I love when I get those extras that are practical and cheap
Its always better to feed your fish live food it'll give you healthier fry and if not frozen baby brine shrimp helps alot to first bites is good but fry need a varied diet
