Ha! That is awesome. Bettas seem to be under the impression that they're not even fish. I'm pretty sure mine resents me for putting him in a tank with fish. By all water quality, space and environmental standards, this guy should be happier than ever. Instead, he hides behind the filter as if...
Good question! One cranky old male betta, 8 neons from my 35 gal that my tiger barbs suddenly started beating on, 2 new bronze cories and a zebra nerite snail.
For plants, there are various species of bacopa, bolbitis fern, a rosette sword, swarf sag, a dying water onion, an aponogenton...
The plants are all leftovers, clippings and whatever didn't work in the main tank. Just set up DIY CO2 and am very excited to see all these ugly duckings turn into swans! Work lights, soda bottles, box filters...this whole setup is ghetto fab, in the best way possible.
Last summer, I picked up one of those cheapo plant bulb assortments from Wal-Mart, which wasn't the first time and I've gotten some pretty sweet plants from them before. I'd mostly gotten some fungus-enrobed slimeballs though.
This batch, I decided to drop into my koi winter tank, located in...

Those angels are stunning. The new tank looks very promising for them! Trial and error is what it's all about and this forum rocks for reference. Good luck!
Thanks! I never knew that. I always thought plants required aerial light. I went out and got an LED fixture that was on crazy clearance and I added it to the top of the tank along with the existing fluorescent. If my plants don't show significant improvement, I'll look into adding lighting...
I have about 20" between the top of the gravel and the surface of the water. I'm still rocking the original T8 fluorescent hood with a supposedly plant friendly bulb but I know that it isn't enough.
Waterproof LED strips you say? I'm intrigued. That sounds awesome but shouldn't the light come...
I've been looking everywhere, reading lots of conflicting information on lighting for planted tanks. What else is there to do when snowed in? The trouble here is that the tank in question is quite narrow and I'm confused as to what type of light would be best. I'm trying to make the 35gal hex...
