Yes like timbo2 mentioned the DR will gradually become LR again. I would take a bucket of salt water out of your tank, and shake and rinse the DR in it, to remove any dead creatures; also you may need to lightly scrub the DR with a soft brush to remove any dead stuff.

I would just use a good quality white paint. Unless you can find a source on-line for some flat polished aluminum, but it probably would have a minimum quantity order. I think the white paint should work very well for you, it’s cheap so give that a try first, if you don’t like it no big deal...
