They usually retract when they are dying. I heard of mushrooms and some softies separting from their base when they are not happy (i.e. not enough light etc.) Might be too much current.Might try putting in a QT with reduced current for a while

yep it disintegrated today :( no I have always had in the same position near the bottom and seemed to flourish for months. I'm not sure what killed it bc I have a frogspawn and another electric nearby and they are still doing fine. I didn't see any signs of jelly so I don't think it could be...
