It sounds like coralline and it's purely an ascetic choice. If it's on the rear of the tank and not blocking your view I prefer to leave it.

I am using focus and metron (much longer actual name) from seachem to treat some Ich in my tank that is popping up. I'm pretty happy with it and no I'll effects so far.
