Ammonia and Nitrate in tap water...

Hello, I've just moved to a place that has well water surrounded by farms and so the water from the tap reads 1.0ppm ammonia and 5.0ppm nitrate. What is a sustainable way of dealing with this? I have Aqueon Water Conditioner but that only mentions getting rid of chlorine and ammonia so I...

    Moving my aquarium

I think my husband's truck may have a 100W outlet so he's going to check if that would work with the aquarium heater. Theoretically (as this may not be the solution), could I put fish, tank water and heater in a bucket? The heater is for our 20G tank and there'd be no water movement other than...

    Moving my aquarium

Hi all, I've searched and haven't quite found the answer to this. I'm moving to a different state and the journey is going to be approx 7 hours and I want to know the best way to move my fish. I have 2 corys and a pleco - they're pretty hardy as they've outlived other fish when I was learning...

    PH

I also have a question about pH... mine sticks around 8.0. We're new to having fish, have lost a lot and only just learnt about and cycled the tank. But I want to be on top of everything before buying new fish (currently have 2 corys and a pleco in a 20g tank). I know some people say that...

Cloudy water 12 days after cartridge change

You've been quiet for a few weeks so hopefully you've got to the bottom of it but I wanted to chime in. I'm also relatively new to this and was struggling with water quality and fish dying... I think nearly all down to not understanding cycling. I just did a fish-in cycling and things seem a...

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

Remember that I'm a newbie! I've never heard of mangrove wood... can you explain what it does? I thought the biological filtration was the nitrogen cycle? Is the liquid bacteria needed in addition to cycling the tank again?

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

Ok, got a master kit. The parameters are: pH 8.2 Ammonia 0.50ppm Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20ppm So, if the tank was fully cycled, the ammonia would be 0 and this might be why we're struggling? What about the pH? Is that too high? Whats the best way to lower it?

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

The strips don’t test for ammonia. I’ll pick up a master kit tomorrow and work out the level. Thanks for your help!

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

We only have the test strips so they're really vague: GH: Between 0 & 100 NO3: Between 10 & 25 NO2: 0 Cl2: 0 KH: 80 pH: 7.2 How would I know if it's still cycled? Because there are 0 nitrites and nitrates are present? We inherited it set up when I didn't know anything about cycling (I still...

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

The molly died last night. I'd put in some Lifeguard All-in-one yesterday but it was too late. I know I wrote a lot but any advice or suggestions is much appreciated! I really want to keep an aquarium but am ready to give up rather than keep letting fish die.

Troubleshooting a whole lot of death for a newbie!

Hi! I'm relatively new to all this as I was given an aquarium in May 2020 when a friend was concerned that her fish wouldn't survive a cross-country move. Unfortunately, the fish haven't had the best survival rate staying with me either. I'd love to have any advice on how to improve that...

    What’s wrong with my gourami??

Hi! I’m relatively new to keeping fish as I inherited an aquarium from a friend who was moving away. Can anyone tell me what’s wrong with the gourami and how to treat it? It is still able to poop but this *growth?* has been there for at least three days. Otherwise, it seems healthy. Any...
