Ya, there are a number of parts of the website seem to be missing. Like the site is still in the process of being built. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are not legit though.

The pictus was my guess too. I checked the filter and didn't find anything that could have been remains. The pictus is approximately 4.5" and they could have fit in it's mouth. I have another tank which I will be keeping the smaller fish in from now on.

I had this problem in a 10 gal tank of mine. The 4 day blackout should work to kill the bacteria. I would probably do a daily 10% water change during the blackout just to help get the bacteria out of the tank as it dies off.

My tank has an oily type substance on the surface all the time. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ya, my betta likes to hide in the hole at the top. I used to have a ghost knife and it liked to hide in there too. I had to return the ghost knife though because he would have soon outgrown the tank and I don't have the money for a bigger one yet.

I saw a contraption at Pet Smart the other day. It appeared metal blades for cutting and plastic blades for planting. I don't remember the price but it might be worth looking into.

I have a 29 gal tank and had many of the same problems. I found that by upgrading from the crappy HOB that came with the tank to the Penguin that I have now that my paramaters have balanced out quite well. I also increased the frequency of my PWC's to weekly instead of bi-weekly. Hang in there...
