    This new hobby is tough...

Thanks for replying. I have been using this tank to practice and get a little experience under my belt. In the 90 gal, I will have live sand, live rock, powerheads and skimmer. I did a water change about two weeks ago and everything went well. I didn't rinse the filter though... I just let it...

    This new hobby is tough...

I set up a 20 gal tank 8 weeks ago. While it was cycling, my wife, bless her, bought me a Butterfly fish and a Clown. At the time, The tank was only two weeks old. Both fish did great for 6 weeks until this past weekend. I noticed they weren't eating and were at the top of the water seemingly...

What's the truth about Power Compacts?

Thanks fishfreek. I'll keep that in mind. Seems like boardsurfer is confused with a Gergia avatar and a location of South Carolina.

What's the truth about Power Compacts?

Thanks for the help. I think I'll go with the PC 4x65 type of fixture. At least for the first year or so, I'll be keeping fish, live rock and inverts. I will be building my own canopy so if I decide to get SPS, I'll add some MH bulbs later. No problem because I'll be taking my time with this anyway.

What's the truth about Power Compacts?

I'm about to start setting up a 90 gal tank. After starting it as a FOWLR tank, I will eventually make it a reef tank. I was reading "The Simple Guide to Marine Aquariums" last night which kind of confused me. From the book: "A 55-Watt PC actually provides more light intensity than a 110-Watt...

    Sizes of fish and stands

I have a 29 gal freshwater tank on a wrought iron stand that needed to be moved because of remodeling. I emptied the water to about halfway and carefully slid it over across the room. Not that I would do that again but the stand was very sturdy. Also, the stand is 25 years old. I can agree...

    Nitrates are taking over

I'm still new at this, but I read many times not to use tap water for a saltwater aquarium. I elected to haul 20 gallons of distilled water from the grocery store. This might be cumbersome for a 90 gal tank. RO may be the way to go.
