I have those exact snails and my gobies are constantly playing in the sand stirring up the very top. Is that all i have to worry about? What about the waste that works its way deeper into the sand. wont it build up and increase nitrates?
I have a 40G Tank with Knight Gobies and Sardine Cichlids. I use cichlid salts in the water so I wouldnt call it Brackish but it does have a good amount of salt. I have a 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 inch sandy bottom.
Now my question is how should I maintain the sand? Is it deep enough for anaerobic bacteria...
Thanks for the reply.
The tank is in the process of being planned. I have two freshwater tanks and am now stepping up to the real deal but I want to make sure I do it right the first time so I'm taking my time. My plan is to go with a 100g to 165g depending on space. I also want a larger...
If I had a system that was cycled with live rock only and even after the cycle I allowed it to mature without adding any fish or corals for say 4 months. Maybe I could seed it with amphipods, copepods and live sand with lots of beneficial worms and just let it sit. Also I would have a refugium...
I don't think I can with whats commonly available but I think it can be done with the correct creatures. I recently watched the National Geographic special on lake tang. In that they dicussed how the lake is so diverse its almost like the ocean there are copepods shrimps jellies sponges. If you...
Goes any one have any experience with these?
If so what are some pros and cons?
If for instance I wanted to get some corals that required moderate flow would a gyre tank create too much flow and be bad for the coral.
Thanks Ziggy
I was planning on letting the system mature for a bit before adding any fish so that everything can settle and all of the critters can really establish themselves without any predators.
Also if any undesirables appear from the live rock I will have plenty of time to find and get...
Cool much appreciated. At the end of the day if they all coexist in the tank without killing eachother or bothering eachother I'll call it a day and a school.
I'm going to research that other option as well. Thanks again. If you think of anything let me know.

Thanks for the reply.
I am actually in the process of planning a tank/ system of tanks. But I want the school for a 100 - 165 gallon tank. I don't want to go with the chromis just because I see then everywhere. I'm looking for something that is a bit more out of the ordinary.
So you do think...
Can anyone recommend some beautiful schooling fish that are completely reef safe and peaceful yet beautiful with interesting behaviors? And by school I mean a fish that would tolerate being in a group of at least ten.
Some things I've read suggest that a benggai cardinal (sp?) might be good for...
Thanks for the responses. It really helps to have all of the different points of view.
cmor1701d, I thought that it was bad to have anaerobic areas in the tank. Does'nt that create that poisonous gas I forget whats its called. Which is actually what I meant by toxic materials. I also meant the...
I would like to check the accuracy of some information I have recently been told.
Is it true that by placing Fiji mud under live sand in a main display tank of a reef set up, that you will not have to worry about stirring up the sand because the mud will keep detrimental algae from growing and...
Thanks for the interest I will definately let you know what happens. It probably will take awhile though. I think patience will be the key to this experiment.
I was actually wanting to start a new larger tank where I could get some of the critters going for a few months. That is the shrimp insects and algae. Then once those guys have a viable situation going I could add the mbuna.
Plus like in saltwater I have read that the african lakes have...
