    55 Gallon Lighting

I have a 55 gallon reef tank. I have been using lights that I had originally purchased for a 90 gallon tank. I have 2 250 watt 14,000k's, and 4 actinics at 54 watts a piece. The lights are set about 6 inches above the tank and I have only been running the MH's. If I lift the lights another...

    RO water

If the water your doing your PWC with has nitrates, then you'll never get the nitrates out of your tank. As you stated "I tested my water for nitrates and it seems that my water has about a 40 in Nitrates before I ever put it in the tank." An RO/DI unit is the ONLY way to go. I don't believe...

First batch of Reef Crystals on the way

I have started using the new Seachem salt. Calcium is extremely high (500) although I don't think that will be an issue. pH is good (8.2) and alkalinity was 9.1 dkh. I previously used IO (calcium too low) and Kent (contsant battle with alk and pH). Just my two cents. Will update on Seachem...

Need help understanding "live sand" and 1st cycle

Your pH should be at around 8.1-8.4 If your salinity was 1.02 you should add more salt. Get the salinity around 1.023 - 1.025. It seems like your cylce is going just fine, even without the raw shrimp.

2 yrs later back to where i started

The problem is either Nitrates or Phosphates. You might not detect them on your tests, because the algae are using them up that quickly......find the source of the problem...How often do you feed them....has there been a change in lighting? Maybe you should change your bulbs??

    Skimmer Question

too much IMO. From my reasearch you should have about 3/4 inch in the collection cup a day...unless you have a huge bioload.

Blue Moon Light - On? Off? Time?

I'd say leave them on 24/7. I read that LED's don't like to be shut on and off. I personally leave mine on for 4 hours after "lights out", and then have them shut off. I have it in my head that the fishys can't sleep with the moon lights on.

    RO unit break-in period

I just bought a Seachem Pinnacle series RO unit to replace the old outdated one I bought at a yard sale. Is it normal for the unit to go through a break-in period. I have only "made" about 10 gallons of RO water, but I am testing phosphates at .25 - .5 ppm. I contacted Seachem adn they said the...

    Purigen

Is anyone on here using Purigen? I started using a bag about a month ago and was mazed at how it worked. They say you can recharge it by using a bleach solution but I am afraid of doing this for fear of not getting rid of all the chlorine.

    snail, or what ?

I just bought a frilly mushroom rock, and I found a snail looking thing in the water in the bag when I got home. I plopped in my tank thinking it was a snail. Last night, after seeing it under the moonlights, I'm not so sure. It has an oval shaped shell that only covers the top of it's body...

    Quick Question

There are good and bad things with acrylic and with glass...it's just a matter of opinion. With acrylic you don't have any seems, so no leaks. But acrylic is also easier to scratch. Go with what you like and that fits your budget.
