A picture or two will go a long way toward our being able to help. I am betting it is an Algae of some form. High nitrates and lower lighting will allow for algae blooms.
I used to have a 72 Gal. bow front that had that center brace broken. I made a brace for it because the front glass would flex outward almost 2 inches when full without the brace. Even with the replacement brace the tank eventually had the seal fail. IMO do not remove it.
I use the fishing line method personally. Get really light weight line. I use 4 pound test line personally, but that is just because that is what I have from trout fishing.
