    launched the 20 gallon fowlr

If you have live rock put it in now, don't wait put it right in the faster you put it in the faster your cycles over. You don't need media, your media IS the live rock and sand. It becomes live which means it grows the bacteria YOU need to combat ammonia. Like I said before listen to the LFS if...

Just saying if there was a faster way I think everyone on this board and everyother would be doing it/promoting it. Can't rush nature. It's like making chickens without laying eggs.

Add snails/critters during cycling or after?

you want to premix the water before doing the PWC, letting it settle for atleast 24 hours with a heater and powerhead/airstone. Gets the PH where you need it to be and temperature or your readings will be wacky. And if you did it the way you were asking, and had inhabitants you would basically...

Bacteria takes time to grow. The only way to make it quicker as far as I know is by adding cured live rock from a mature tank with the beneficial bacteria already cultured on it. Then it still won't be a couple days. When your ammonia nitrite are at 0 and the nitrate is sky high with no trace of...

    2 Feather Dusters!

I found a whole bunch start to pop up when I put my lights and 30lbs of CS sand in my tank (over 10lbs of live). I was really excited to find life too!!!. I watch them all the time...how sad lol. I found this crazy red worm last night with what looked to be white eggs in its butt. He was...

I think you are misinterpreting the whole Fishless Cycle thing. The crab leg as you used instead of shrimp, causes an ammonia buildup. You are by no means supposed to try to stop it. You leave the crab in there to rot, get smelly, and decompose. Basically Do Not Touch the Tank, for atleast a...

    uggggg, brown algea bloom

thanks devilish! I guess it's no different then starting a new tank. I'm quite experienced with freshwater aquariums, but this SW thing seems to be a new can of worms. Definitely more interesting in my book! Sorry for hijacking your thread blazeyreef. Happy reefing!

    uggggg, brown algea bloom

Since this has to o with my situation also I thought it would be best to post here. I just recently got a brown algae bloom everywhere and thought it's about time to do a PWC, so today I just got a 15 gallon batch of SW ready for the PWC in 2 days. Now reading this, I misjudged the timing and...

    actinic lighting question

thanks guys! I have been reading alot from you guys for the past year or so. You always come through with some informative stuff. I was going to go VHO but the wequipment is kind of scarce in Canada and/or expensive. I most likely will go MH when the time comes to get some corals. Still waiting...

    actinic lighting question

I was just wondering if actinic lighting counts in your WPG calculation or is it merely for the blue effect we are trying to reproduce? I have a 35 gallon 36lx12wx18h, and ordered two strip T5 lights with 21w 10k and a 21w actinic each. If the actinic do not count then my WPG is not very good.

I tried searching but came up short for what I wanted to know. With t-5 Normal output tubes can I use a fixture from Home Depot? as long as the wattage for each bulb is under 21 watts? If not when refferring to CF you mean the swirl normal light socket bulbs correct? If so would 3 bulbs...
