    Hey from Newark

Hey everyone. 30 yr old married guy from Newark, NY checking in. If you dont know, I'm about an hour southeast of rochester, and about an hour southwest of syracuse. I'm still a beginner hobbyist. We have 4 tanks in the house right now. I'm really getting into creating my own backgrounds...

IMHO, I wouldnt worry about sealing the back completely. You are going to be putting plenty of silicone on the back to it just to seal it to the stick already. As for leaving space.. other than the compartments or cut-outs you will create for your equipment, I wouldnt bother leaving any extra...

Hate water changes? What about an automated system?

ok ok.. I am still new here.. geesh. you could still patent it an stuff though... imagine this marketing campaign for a tv commercial: :cue cheesy music: Fade in on a small child.. bravely holding back tears as he clasps his mother's hand. Close up of the mother, comforting the...

Hate water changes? What about an automated system?

ok, this may sound a bit silly... but what you guys are describing is a toilet. We already HAVE all of the tech for this at our disposal. why not just directly copy a standard toilet tank/plumbing and make it "flush" once a week?

    Cichlid stocking help?

The substrate is just plane old aquarium gravel. the rocks along the bottom creating the caves is just your everyday red slate. The back wall is styrofoam covered in cement. I used coloring to match the red slate as much as possible. the big pice in the middle is driftwood. unfortunately...

    Cichlid stocking help?

the whisper pumps 330 gph, so I'm getting 6x turnover with that... I have my powerhead just circulating water at about 100 gph, but it is unfiltered. I might replace my powerhead with a Fluval 4+ (260 gph) which would give me just over 10x turnover per hour. do you think that is necessary...

    Cichlid stocking help?

sorry about that.. it is a 55gal. I have a HOB whisper 60, and a Maxi-Jet 400 powerhead to help with circulation. I have no problem geting extra filtration if needed. I am also a tiny bit woried about my substrate. Everything i have read recommends sand for cichlids, and I have gravel. I...

    Cichlid stocking help?

thanks for the info! The more I look at the various choices, I am really leaning towards peacocks. From everything I have read, it is considered pretty safe to combine different groups of them together in a community. My next question is getting the right combination... (male/female) I have...

    My first 3d build

ok, all I have to add now is a couple of fake plants around the bottom. I am finished with leeching the bad stuff from the concrete, now I am just cycling the tank. Please let me know what you think!! please keep in mind 2 things... 1. this is going to be for cichlids, so I wanted as many...

Putting gravel in AFTER filling the tank up

are the fish in yet? If not... I would hold off on adding fish until the gravel is in and settled. Just make sure you rinse it off first and get all the dust and garbage off. Remember too... you can always empty out the tank.. a water change never hurt. If you already have fish in... I...

    Correct preparation?

jsoong, thanks. that is exactly what I was looking for!!! zero2dash: Thanks for the tips! I'm not too worried about the substrate issue, as I am not switching anything out or anything. This is a fresh, first-time-set-up. As for the fish... I am totally baffled as to which cichlids to get...
