Thanks. That's what I thought as well so I kept adding more water. It stopped the sputtering but still kept emptying out in the back. I tried posting a picture of my tank but I guess I can't because I'm so new to the site.

I'm somewhat new to the aquarium scene. My daughter won a goldfish at a carnival so we bought her a small tank for it. Since then we've moved up to a larger tank. We've had this larger tank for a few months now with no major issues until last month. But lately the pump has been sputtering...
