Activated carbon does help to remove organic material in the water which is helpful, although not required.

Yea. Just cut some of the old filter pad up and place it behind a new filter pad. Shouldn't be a problem. I actually change the filter material in my 10 gallon without doing this and there is never a problem. Bacteria stick to every surface in the tank.

Yea I agree. Change the water as soon as possible and wait about adding any other plants until the water is normal.

I tried dirt. Messy tryin to plant after initial set up so make sure all your plants are a go. Dirt started coming through ( I used gravel cap) and plants died after about 6 months of set up. Changed it out for flouramax, which was hell because the anoxic conditions created so much hydrogen...

Haven't added plants, new fish, anything in about 6 months and a few days ago, I rearranged my plants and notice one snail in the tank layer that day. Now there are about 20 snails. How is this possible? Where did it come from.
