    Aquarium newbie questions

Thank you Pierre for the detailed response. That photo was from day one, and someone already educated us on the need for Anubias to be exposed a little. I will attach some photos of the roots to show you how we pulled them out of the substrate. Thanks for the tip on vacuuming the substrate. I...

    Aquarium newbie questions

Our fern came in a straw type bed that the store told me was from a coconut tree or something. Since the roots were so intertwined, I spread it apart and used a piece of wood to weigh it down. So it is above the substrate.

    Aquarium newbie questions

How does one go about "pruning" under water plants, even if to remove some leaves that look really brown? Also, where do the plants get their nutrients? From the fish effluent?

What is this on Java fern?

Thank you for replying to so many of our questions: you really have been quite helpful. So if the fern is growing spores, wouldn't that be an indication that the plant is healthy?

    Aquarium newbie questions

The Java has been in the tank since day one. I started another thread on the Java, as in addition to blackened leaves, it had several dots on it.

    Aquarium newbie questions

Hello, We have had our aquarium for a little over a month now and I am trying to understand how to take care of the plants that we have. Here are some details on the aquarium: - 10 gallon tank - 15 W T8 bulb, on a timer for 10hr a day - three guppies - two smallish Anubias, one of which...

What is this on Java fern?

Hello, I noticed some dots on Java fern leaves. Any idea what this is?

First API test results, now what?

Okay, 24hrs after my water change, I think I have the following results: Ammonia: between 0 and 0.25ppm (looks closer to 0.25ppm) Nitrite: looks like 0ppm Nitrate: editing to state that I think this is non-zero, while not as dark as the 5ppm colour My arm is tired from the vigorous shaking...

First API test results, now what?

I don't think we had pre-cycled media, and I was not expecting it to be cycled in such a short period of time. I think that the fact that I did the measurements after a water change may have made the results low, does that make sense? Thanks

First API test results, now what?

Thank you all for such great info. As a bit of a nerd, I like the idea of collecting data, and I appreciate the notion of not getting hung up on specifics. It was my understanding that there was a range of pH to stay within, so I am glad to hear there is a wide margin. I did those...

First API test results, now what?

I think I understand the general concept, including the role of bacteria that breakdown the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. What I don't know is: - what is a target pH for the plants and guppies, or how to influence it - what the target concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates would...

First API test results, now what?

Filled the tank with substrate and piece of wood Oct 29, ran it until plants and fish went in Nov 5.

First API test results, now what?

Hi friendly folks: I will start with aquarium details: - 10 gallon tank - 15 W T8 bulb, on a timer for 10hr a day - three guppies - two smallish Anubias, one of which sprouted something that the guppies pecked at until it fell off - one relatively large Java Fern, which has some blackened...

    A bug in our aquarium

Thanks for the information. I hardly see the snail, and I have been trying to keep an eye out for more, which I have not noticed. Based on some reading on guppies, I suspect we may be over feeding them, so we are reducing the amount of food we give them. Thanks again.
