    SALLY LIGHTFOOT CRAB;

    I have two. They are neat crabs, and a fairly decent herbivore. My biggest one has gotten humongous, but ignores the fishes.

    What size tank for a beginner?

    As big as possible, as small as necessary. I agree with all that is stated here. Larger tanks equate to larger water changes, more power consumption, and more initial set-up costs. The benefit is a more stable envirinment and less chance of an expensive crash. You can do a nice set-up in a 55...

    I agree with Atari, if possible, try another LFS. If not, see if they will hold your fish for a couple of weeks. Are these clowns tank bred or wild?

    Fluidized Bed Filter

    I just installed a Lifeguard Fluidized bed filter (FB600) on my 55 gallon tank. Here's a link to the one I'm using. http://www.aquaticeco.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/product.detail/iid/7839/cid/1965 I'm using the recommended powerhead, an Aquaclear 301. It seems as if the sand is not really being...

    Strange False Perc Behavior

    Two days ago, I introduced two similarly sized False Percula into a new 55 gallon tank that has 80 pounds of live rock, a few snails, a couple of Sally Lightfoot crabs and a couple of Serpent Starfish. One of the Clowns, Bozo, has taken to swimming from end to end of the tank, nose up, about...

    Tums for Calcium?

    Has anyone ever considered Tums for a calcium supplement in their reef tank? Each tablet contains 1250 mg of calcium carbonate, adiptic acid, FD&C Blue, D&C Red27, D&C Red 30, FD&C Yellow6, Mineral oil, Sodium Polyphosphate, starch, sucrose and talc. I'm new to reef tanks, but as a nurse, am...

    Pitfalls of a Reef Newbie

    Thank you for the welcome! I'm using RO water from LFS#1, and did a 15 gallon water change with RO water from LFS#2 today. I also put in four snails, five hermits, and a little piece of live rock with some unidentified coral on it, as well as a small sponge. That piece had a couple of...

    Pitfalls of a Reef Newbie

    I just got back from LFS#2. I was amazed that he did not jump at the chance to sell me a different skimmer. He uses the Sea Clone on most of his tanks, and stated that on a new tank with nothing making waste, any skimmer will have precious little to skim. He advised to leave the skimmer off for...

    Pitfalls of a Reef Newbie

    Ok, here's the plan for today.......... Return to the LFS#1 and get the parts that I paid for when I bought the skimmer, or return the thing. I really don't think it is an air leak, as when the air flow is totally shut off, there are no bubbles. Then I will go to LFS#2 and just price an Aqua C...

    Pitfalls of a Reef Newbie

    First of all, sorry for the long post, but I must give the history. About two weeks ago I decided to take the plunge and start on a reef tank. I have not done saltwater before. I bought a 55 gallon tank, live coral substrate, a bunch of live rock, a protein skimmer, lights and assorted stuff...
