Fish suddenly dying for no reason? This may be the cause.

    Here they are. :) http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_maintenance_gloves.asp?ast=&key=

Fish suddenly dying for no reason? This may be the cause.

I'm sure they break down, and get removed by filtration as well, but newbies always seem to have their hands in the tank... It's usually the newer people that seem to be having the most problems. (athough it happens to experienced folk when setting up new tanks too) I was thinking the...

Fish suddenly dying for no reason? This may be the cause.

IMO I don't think it's necessarily due to the antibacterial ingredients, but there is an angle in this that I've been mulling over for some time. Right now I have 2 tanks... A 20g and a 40g. The 20g gets hardly any real maintenance performed on it aside from filter changes and topping off the...

    Tetra-Tec PF 500 Filter

I love my canister... Wouldn't have an HOB again (except maybe if I set up some smaller tanks). My Magnum 350 is much easier to maintain than any HOB I've had. Just close off the valves lift the canister off the motor, and I can clean it anywhere I feel... Plus the amount of media you can get it...

    Fish Names

Let's see... I never named all my fish... Just ones that seemed to need it. I had 2 CAEs that grew to about 5" each that I called Tweedledee and Tweedledum (dee and dum for short)... RIP and curses on the Oscar that 'et 'em. (too big for my tank, bro knew someone who'd take them, but neglected...

    FW instead of SW?

Since you've got all the gear you might as well do SW. After keeping an SW tank for the last 6 years I realized that there's really not much difference. Virtually all the maintenance is the same with the exceptions of having a separate tank to prepare water for PWCs, and the addition of using...

    Somewhat Forgotten, Underappreciated Aquarium Fishes

Seen blind cave fish at local lfs and at Wal-mart They had an African Butterfly at Petsmart here a couple weeks ago. Used to see Chocolate Gouramis in Petsmart all the time, but now that I think of it I haven't lately. Never seen a leaf fish around here, but have always looked for them. See...

I just went to the GA Aquarium ...

I guess I just wasn't cut out for reef tanks... I actually tried elevating them closer to the lights with rocks, but that never worked either. I'll just stick with FW... Until I have a place with space for as many tanks as I want that is. ;)

funny! my cae thinks he's a seal

Did you ever have an upside down cat in there with the clown??? I had a clown that started doing that after I added an upside down cat. They used to swim around under things together like that. Almost like the clown forgot what it was. ;)

    bubbles in substrate

In that case... It more than likely nitrogen, and AFIK not harmful. If the gravel is cleaned regularly then there's probably nothing bad down there. The bacteria are most likely doing their job of cleaning in the gravel, and the nitrogen bubbles are the by-product that you release when you vac.

    Tank Lighting

Agree... Use 50/50 bulbs from your lfs. I've used them on SW tanks (until I discovered power compacts), and they work pretty good.

    bubbles in substrate

Smell your tank... If there is a rotten egg smell it might be hydrogen sulfide gas from organic waste decomposing under the substrate. It is toxic. If so you should vac the gravel well to get whatever is rotting under there out. Maybe do a 50% water change as well if the tank smells after the...

    introduction of a female gourami.

You bought a male... Female Dwarf Gouramis are a pale blue-grey with yellow vertical stripes. regardless of the Leporinus the other male will continue to beat up on it. If you have another tank, or know someone who can take it for you then that would be my suggestion. If you are planning to...

    Crushed Coral Discolouring water

That happens to me every time I put in a new substrate no matter how good I rinse it. It's a bacterial bloom, and the best way I've found to get rid of it is heavy aeration, and water changes. Do you have fish in there yet??? If not then my best suggestion is to drain and replace all the water...
