I just bought the same unit today so far I'm really liking it. Does anyone know if all 3 housing are supposed to be filled with water? Cause on mine only the DI housing totally fills with water.
Well then my only options now really are either an HOB skimmer or an external skimmer....I'm leaning towards external skimmer but don't really understand how they work.

It says that skimmer can be used for external use but what would I...
Alright thanks guys, one more question. I will be placing the skimmer in the refugium part of my sump which has a 4 inch sand bed, can I put it on the sand or will I need to put it on something else?
So I have decided to pick up a protein skimmer and place it in my sump. How does this model look?

I have a 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump/fuge. The only inhabitants I have currently are a yellow tang, a coral beauty, and a purple...

Alright well I'm gonna order about 30 ceriths and 15 large nerites tonight from Reefcleaners.org hopefully they will make quick work of the diatoms. My yellow tang and my coral beauty pick at them but not enough to clear them.
Well that's not good. Is there anything else that can be done because they are very ugly and I don't just have a small patch of them they are almost completely covering the sandbed in my 75 gallon.
I am having some diatoms growing all over my sandbed and rocks. What would be a good clean up crew for them? I was thinking of getting about 35 dwarf ceriths and about 10 large nerites. Does this sound OK for eating diatoms? Also what other ways can I get rid of these diatoms?
