There's a few bigger more docile south American cichlids you could go with.

I think the rainbow shark is in the same boat as the firemouth. I'm sure some people have got away with peaceful ones but generally there will be some aggression.

Sounds like you're in the middle of the cycle. If there's no fish then no problem. Ride it out.

If your water has silicates in it naturally, the diatoms will never go away. Nerite snails do the trick as posted above.

Hard water or 8.6 doesn't kill fish. Your nitrate level also doesn't kill fish. I'd look at possible disease in your tank affecting your fish.

I don't care for melafix. Methylene Blue should work. Personally I'd dose Seachem Paragaurd and Seachem Kanaplex at the same time with 50% water changes every two days until he heals up. The Paragaurd you'll dose daily. The Kanaplex you dose every two days.

It wasn't about a regime of consistently skipping three days of feeding. It was about how many days a healthy fish can go without food while out of town. As far as fasting for digestive reasons it was argued 24 hours.
