Starting up - 55g - opinions for gear and stock

I'm not gonna have anything to show off for a fair long time. I'm still in the "saving up money" stage for at least a few months before I even start buying equipment. I just figured that it'd be very helpful to figure out exactly what I wanted to put in there as far as fish and whatnot so I'd...

That was the first thing I checked, but thanks.

No apologies necessary, I'm glad to see it! For some reason though I haven't been getting the notification emails of new posts that I'd been seeing, so I wasn't aware there was even a reply after my last until I checked in on a whim...

Yeah, if I were going to go ahead and build the stand, my plans would be building it out to 50x14". A little extra space never hurt anyone. I considered the 75-gallon instead, but I'm a wee bit concerned about the logistics of putting 750-800 lbs of dead weight on six square feet of floor. If...

Nah, no extra stand; I haven't purchased one. I'm in a complete and exhaustive planning stage now and won't actually be even purchasing any equipment for probably a few months yet. But yes, customization and knowing it'd survive the end of the world are very definite plusses to constructing...

Standard footprint size for a 55 gal is 48x13". The reason I picked dual 10s/15 Highs is because they're 20x10" and thus would each easily fit under half of the show tank, leaving me with eight inches (minus center support width) of length and three inches of width for plumbing. (Also because...

Any opinions from you very knowledgeable individuals on setting up two standard 10gal or 15gal high tanks, one as a sump and one as a fuge, and then skipping the Magnum 350 filter entirely? Ziggy953 seems to indicate use of such a setup. That would increase my total water capacity from 55gal...

Starting up a 46 gallon saltwater

I recommend getting the rock first, cycling with the seawater, then adding the sand after that. If the sand is live then the ammonia levels during cycling may well destroy a lot of the living stuff in there. If it's not, then it'll just make cleaning up all the live rock die-off a bit harder...

That's fact. My upgrade cycle however tends to be very very long - it's not likely I'm going to have a larger-than-55 gallon tank for a couple years at a minimum (unless some lottery winnings become involved.) I've been wanting this 55-gallon reef setup for about two years already, and it may...

That would definitely be a concern - I hadn't seen any information about that, and was choosing them mainly just because they look neat. Emerald Mithrax get to about 3", correct? The smallest fish in the tank will be the blue green chromis at also about 3", then the flame angel at 4", the...

It seemed like such a simple idea.

The absolute single most helpful thing I've discovered as a newbie just getting into marine tanks is to buy a good book or two. I'm particularly finding The New Marine Aquarium to be a priceless guide with tons of information, step-by-step instructions, compatibility guides, and all manner of...

Starting up - 55g - opinions for gear and stock

Do you think the emerald mithrax crabs would be alright? They're not hermits so at least shouldn't be competing with the snails for their shells, but should still do a bit of algae cleanup, and I really quite honestly don't feel it necessary to have 63 crabs on my reef just for the visual...

Starting up - 55g - opinions for gear and stock

Needless to say, if I'm having to save some $1500 for the full setup in the first place, it's not exactly going to be a dealbreaker to wait until I have an extra $80 or so for a better skimmer. I would have put it in to begin with if I'd known the opinion of the SeaClone. Original post edited...

Starting up - 55g - opinions for gear and stock

First off, allow me to say that I've been successfully keeping a couple of tropical freshwater community tanks for awhile now with some success, so I'm not a complete newbie. However, this will be my first marine/reef tank, so I figured I'd come to y'all experts to request some opinions. I...

    Tanksitting problems

I've been keeping tetras for about three years now, and my experience has been that the round-bodied tetras (serpaes, black/whites, etc.) are a lot sturdier than the narrow-bodied tetras (neons, glowlights, etc.) Anytime I have anything going on with my tank... whether it's bad water...
