There is a different species known as a scarlet badis that is a nano fish and only grows an inch or so. Normal badis are a south american cichlid that grows to 3-4 inches. I think that the stocking sounds just right for a five gallon :)

Oh wow I did not notice that. However, I really think it does look more female to me since the male had sharper fins while these are flatter and uniform. Is it possibly just a longfin variant?

Haha well this isnt the best picture but this is a photo I took of the male bolivian ram I use to have. You can't see it very good but the ends of his tale are curved and there are red string-like tips that grow out from it.

Yea I agree you mistook the rams for the opposite gender, but you have the genders of the gouramis correct. Are you planning to breed them?
