One of my 2.5 betta tanks has a hood/light on top of it with a fluorescent 15 watt bulb. To be honest, he doesn't seem to mind it at all. I'd say go for it, as long as it doesn't produce intense heat like some halogen light or something. It might help that I have a glass cover.

Bettas look nice in small 2.5 gal tanks. Click on my gallery link in the sig or side, and you can see my setups. Bettas are hard to make out in the pics, but I'll get more sometime soon. Besides, you won't need filters or bubbles or anything if you use bettas. Just a weekly water change...

Being new to fish and aquatic plants, you can guess that I have incurred a minor snail invasion. Unfortunately, while I've read that some people like that, I honestly don't want to deal with them and their growing numbers. They're not bad now, but just want to keep control of what's going on...
