Your fish was in terrible conditions and is very understandably extremely stressed. The cichlids definitely like to hide in caves. I would say give him/her time, along with pristine water and I'm sure "Bob" will warm up.

Unfortunately you won't really be able to tell when he starts to stunt, by the time he grows to 3-4inches the damage would already be done. Think the recommended tank for one alone is 20g.

Definitely need to start doing partial water changes daily to keep your ammonia down, your tank seems to be in the very early stages of cycling. Daily partial water changes are pretty paramount to your fishes health at the moment. I would suggest looking up the nitrogen cycle.

Maybe consider doing more frequent, smaller volume water changes to prevent this from happening again? Hopefully they come around
