If you have high nitrites than you do not have enough beneficial bacteria for you tank's bio-load. Can you move some bio-media from you larger tank to the filter in your QT ? A bio-wheel, bio-balls, or some media from a canister.
I ahve had customers tell me that their danios have turn cannibal on them and killed the other fish in their tank.
If you tank is overstock then that is your main problem. Also to you use any salt in your tank ? If not, then this will help, and keep your temp. under 78 degres.
When buying live bearing fish you should visual inspect the fish for any bacterial infections. Live bearings are prone to bacterial infections. Ask the LFS in which you bought the Wag from to replace him.

I want just enough to cover the bottom. As for decorations I am only going to to have to large fake piece of coral in there.
Also does the crushed coral ever lose it's buffering abilities ?
I am only going to use the python to clean the crushed coral and remove water for my WC. I have two AC 802's but I fell that even one is to much water movement for a figure 8 puffer and a lionfish in a 75 gal.
I plan on doing water changes with a Phyton. So cleaning out the coral will be easier than sand. CC also helps buffer my pH too.
I am trying for a low maintenance tank. Just two fish in there.
As for water movement I think I will by the Power Sweep 228.
I have an Ehiem 2026, I clean my hoses with this:

What color is the cloudiness of your tank ? Smokey, orange, green ?
Smokey = the tank is eighter cycling or you need some carbon
Orange = Too much nitrates, need more bio-filtration
Green = Algae, needs a phosphate remover
