It maybe just enough as long as it's heated, filtered, planted and not in a bowl but ofcourse if space is not a concern i'd go bigger than 2.5g, i have 3.5g in my room at the moment.
This is true, i've only come to realize this after i caught my betta making bubble nests & thought now i know why he flares at me than before. All along i thought that the bubbles was from my filter. Heres a short video of it & its really fun watching them ?

That's the reason your having ammonia spike coz your tank is too small and goldfish poops a lot. Get a bigger tank if you want to keep goldfish. Watch about cycling in youtube, there are great and easy to understand nitrogen cycle. If space is a problem get atleast 2.5g and betta. Again for...
May i ask what's your water parameters? You've mentioned that you don't have a filter. I'd advice you to get one. With a heater and a filter you'd do your betta a big favor and It is important that your tank is cycled. Hope he gets better soon.
Im no expert but i've read somewhere that bumping up the heater also increases your ph and with higher heat it also improves beneficial bacteria a lot. This is when your doing a fishless cycle.
@jc102 Thanks! Im just using a standard gravel. You can dose fertizers or use root tabs if you want but its just optional. I dose mine with excel & iron one's a week. Excel also helps get rid of algae.
Give it sometime, it will go away. You can also put algae eaters to help get rid some of the algae. Algae although it looks ugly but it also indicates you got a healthy aquarium. Try putting some live, easy to care plants. You'll be amazed how your tank can get crystal clear. I assume your tank...
Your tank is new, that's normal. I had problems with algae and diatoms but it goes away after a couple of weeks. As long as it's not an algae bloom. Do you have live plants? I'd suggest plant some. They do not only take out excess nutrients but they also help balance ecosystem in your tank.
Tank probably crashed and may have restarted. Although beneficial bacteria may still be in your other stuffs like gravel, decorations etc it may not be enough due to change of filters / bfb have died if washed in tap water. Most of the beneficial bacteria lives in your filter.
I had the same problem just a month ago. My Betta would just hang on top of the water while the neons where fine. I was in the process of cycling the tank and had the nitrite spike as well. All i did was do a pwc and dose with prime, stress zyme & coat. After 12-24hrs did a pwc again until...
I have an overstock planted tank. Few snails, dose excel once a week.Light is 6-8hrs a day. I think fast grower plants/floating plants helps take the nutrients.
